The history of the Chasselas gives rise to controversies but we suppose that it is one of the oldest vines cultivated by the man.
The large number of forms of Chasselas shows it is an ancient vine variety. But we need to verify if the Egyptian paintings, 5000-year-old, allow to conclude in a growing so old. In the Fayoum oasis we find vines comparable to the Chasselas what would confirm its oriental origin.
It is said that in 1523, the vicount of Auban – a diplomat of François 1er in Soliman’s court – imported vines of Chasselas from Constantinople to France. They were planted in a greenhouse to give some dessert grapes (Thomery).
It is also said that under Louis XV, the general de Courten imported plants of Fontainebleau in Switzerland. We also speak about the inverse way! The origin of the Chasselas is still unknown, we wonder, the mystery lives.
